Most tunnelling operatives start with an NVQ Level 2 in Tunnelling Occupations, which doesn't require prior underground experience. Ryno Training assesses your background first, then places you on a structured route combining on-site competency training with City & Guilds and CITB-recognised qualifications. You'll typically work toward your CSCS card alongside the NVQ rather than needing one before you start.

An NVQ is the qualification proving your competency in a specific role; a CSCS card is the industry competency card proving you hold that qualification (or an equivalent) to get onto site.

Level 2 typically takes 3-12 months depending on the commitment and time allocated by the candidate and the portfolio evidence gathered whilst on site.

If you company is a CITB levy payer then they can receive a grant for certain NVQs and training through CITB.

In most cases yes, unless you can evidence equivalent competency through prior tunnelling specific site experience. Ryno assesses candidates individually rather than applying a blanket rule, so someone with several years on a TBM may be able to enter directly at Level 3.
